On August 14, Acting Consul General Tom Cooney gave opening remarks at the PAS-sponsored Sign Bilingualism and Deaf Education Seminar Series organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Center for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies. His speech recognized the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the importance of access to education for both hearing and non-hearing students. As part of a PAS grant, three distinguished American scholars in neurolinguistics and deaf education travelled to Hong Kong to share their research findings about the use of sign language in education at the two-day seminar, and provided consultation and training to deaf education professionals.
