On March 7, Consul General Tong presented the U.S. Consulate General’s nominee for International Woman of Courage Award, Joanne Leung, with a certificate in recognition of the work she has done as a supporter of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) community in Hong Kong. She founded Transgender Resource Center (TGR) in 2008 and serves as its chairperson. The aim of the organization is promoting public understanding and acceptance regarding the transgender community, and to provide resources and support for transgender people. Ms. Leung is also the first openly transgender member of a Hong Kong political party and now sits on the Democratic Party of Hong Kong (DPHK) Gender Equality Committee. She also became the first transgender person ever to run for a seat in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (LegCo) during the 2016 elections. The award is in honor of International Women’s Day, which is March 8.
