“United Tastes of America – Asian Chef Challenge” Contestants Demonstrate Culinary Excellence Utilizing U.S. Ingredients – Winner Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers Advances to Final in Tokyo

Chef teams representing culinary establishments across Hong Kong and Macau battled head-to-head Tuesday for the chance to win the “United Tastes of America – Asian Chef Challenge.”  Ultimately, the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers beat out the other 15 teams to win the Hong Kong cooking competition, which took place at the Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre (HITDC) in Pokfulam, Hong Kong.  Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers also won the Best Main Course Award.

Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers will represent Hong Kong in the “United Tastes of America – Asian Chef Challenge” final in Tokyo scheduled for March 2016, and compete against other regional winners from China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.  The overall winner of this prestigious competition will receive a trip to the United States for a culinary adventure.

Sheraton’s team, made up of Chefs Tang Chun Man and Derek Sit, incorporated an array of U.S.  ingredients into their winning menu, including beef, chicken, Alaskan king crab leg, cod, scallops, potatoes, oranges, lemons, Wisconsin ginseng, almonds, pecans, and figs.

Dishes were judged on their careful use of a special selection of U.S ingredients, overall taste, menu creativity, culinary skills, and presentation.  The teams had only 3.5 hours to create, cook, and present to judges a four course menu consisting of an appetizer, soup, main course, and dessert.

Shortly following the cooking competition, an award ceremony was held at the U.S. Consul General’s Residence in Hong Kong.  Awards announced at the reception included the Hong Kong Champion, first and second runners-up, the best courses, and four special awards, including “Most Innovative Dish” and “Best Presentation.”
