Senior U.S. State Department Official Visits Hong Kong

On October 14, the U.S. Department of State’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton visited Hong Kong to meet with senior Hong Kong government officials as well as people from Hong Kong’s business and academic communities.

PDAS Thornton expressed support for Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy under “one country two systems” and pledged continued regular high-level engagement between the United States and Hong Kong across a variety of areas.

“The U.S.-Hong Kong relationship remains strong and vibrant — from our ongoing partnership with the Hong Kong government on economic issues and law enforcement cooperation, to exchange programs that connect academics, professionals and students with their counterparts in the United States,” said Ms. Thornton.

A career-member of the United States Foreign Service, Ms. Thornton carries lead responsibility for the State Department for policy related to China, Mongolia, and Taiwan.
