HONG KONG – The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), with embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, arrived in Hong Kong on April 7 for a scheduled port visit. While in Hong Kong, Sailors and Marines will have the opportunity to participate in community and sporting events with local schools.
Makin Island, the flagship for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, with the embarked 11th MEU, is operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance amphibious capability with regional partners and to serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency. Makin Island’s stop in Hong Kong comes after multi-month operations in the Middle East supporting coalition efforts under Operation Inherent Resolve. Makin Island serves as a sea-base for a number of Marine Corps missions from combat operations to providing humanitarian assistance. Both Makin Island and the 11th MEU are based out of Southern California.
