Macau authorities ask that all persons marrying in Macau show proof that they are currently eligible to marry. Because the United States has no central registry of marriages to “prove” you are not currently wed, such proof is essentially unobtainable for American citizens. In some cases, the Macanese authorities have acknowledged this, and in other cases they have insisted on some documentation from the American Consulate in Hong Kong stating that you are free to marry.
While we have no access to marriage records in the U.S., we can provide you with a sworn statement that may be of assistance in Macau. Please download and complete this form (PDF 62 KB). Then make an appointment to have the document notarized at the American Consulate in Hong Kong.
